In this session, Arturo den Hartog and Tim Sabel, part of Ensemble Klang's Songs of Love & Death, draw attention to the music of the amazing Surinamese composer Majoie Hajary (1921-2017). When composer Majoie Hajary died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 2017 at the age of 96, a jug of Surinamese earth went with her in her coffin. Arturo den Hartog, countertenor Tim Sabel, piano 00:00 Koraknen - Majoie Hajary 03:07 Blue Raga - Majoie Hajary As a fifteen-year-old, Majoie took the boat from Suriname to Amsterdam in 1937. She took the piano entrance exam at the Amsterdam Conservatory. She passed and would continue her studies under the tutelage of Nelly Wagenaar and Willem Andriessen, among others. A rich career follows and she shines on stages worldwide with Liszt, Mozart and Schumann. Her compositions are a fascinating mix of Surinamese music styles, Western, Eastern and African sounds, classical, jazz and funk.
